Abstract:
Photonics has experienced rapid growth in recent years and market promotion. Photonics is an emerging field of science which deals with nanoscale fabrication and characterization techniques. The aim of this paper is to overview some achievements on light harnessed in photonic nanostructures. We present the results from recent papers and from seminal papers. Successful approaches from relevant literature, together with results from our own research are presented. Our research was performed by numerical integrations with the MIT codes and dealt especially with light confinement in nanostructures. This progress has brought with it a renewed interest in surface plasmon-polaritons that allow electromagnetic energy to be localized, confined, and guided on subwavelength scales. Moreover, the locally enhanced field intensities observed in plasmonic structures promise potential for molecular biosensing, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and nonlinear optical device applications.

Abstract:
Background: Thin films produced by the oblique angle deposition (OAD) method are promising nanocolumns’ materials. Their specific properties depend on the self-shadowing effect and formation of columnar grains by OAD. It determines the coating compliance, and consequently its resistance to spallation, as well as its thermal conductivity. The aims of this paper are to introduce readers to discuss how thermal conductivity of thin films varies with inclined angle and temperature.
Methods: Alumina thin films are fabricated by electron-beam evaporation with oblique angle deposition method. The thermal conductivity is measured by the 3ω method. The film thicknesses are measured by cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy.
Results: The thermal conductivity (λf) of alumina thin films is dependent of film thickness at various inclined angles. While the λf of alumina thin films decreases with the increasing inclined angles at various film thicknesses. The λf of alumina thin films increases with the increasing temperature at various inclined angles.
Conclusion: At the various inclined angles, the thermal conductivity of alumina thin films decreases with the increasing porosity. The cross sectional surface of the 1.1 μm thickness alumina thin film deposited at various inclined angles is the cause that the porosity increases with the increasing inclined angles. It increases with the increasing temperature. So the oblique angle deposition method is an effective way to control the thermal conductivity of thin films.

Article Title: Preparation of D-tartaric Acid Modified Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes for Resolution of Propranolol Enantiomers
Author(s): Dong-Ming Peng, Lin-Yan Yu, Jin-Gang Yu, Fei-Peng Jiao, Zhi-Guang Peng and Ting Zhang
Abstract:In this paper, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized by 30 w% hydrogen peroxide to introduce hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups on it. Catalyzed by p-toluenesulfonic acid, D-tartaric acid (DTA) was grafted onto MWCNTs by an esterification reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to elucidate the introduced groups and the morphologies changes of the MWCNTs samples. The D-tartaric acid modified MWCNTs were used as chiral im pregnating reagents for thin-layer chromatography for enantioseparation of propranolol enantiomers, and the chiral separation factor was achieved over 7.23 by a mixed solvent of acetonitrile-tert-butanol-acetic acid (volume ratio is 49:49:2) as developing solvent.

Article Title: Investigation on Interfacial Characteristics of W/Al Nanostructure
Author(s): Ping Yang, Dongjing Liu, Yunqing Tang, Jie Gong, Yu Liu and Haiying Yang
Abstract:The objective of this paper is to provide a systematic investigation on design or evaluation for W/Al interface structure in micro/ nano electronic manufacturing. To understand the basic mechanical properties of the W/Al interface structure, the elastic modulus and the hardness of the sample were investigated by nanoindentation. To investigate the integrating characteristics of the sample in progress, the effect of thermal loading and no-thermal loading on the integrating force of the W/Al interface is tested by nanoscratch. The interfacial bonding force between the films can be obtained for understanding the integrating characteristics. The results show that the interfacial bonding force can be improved by thermal loading, which means the mechanical properties of W/Al interface can be modulated and modified by using thermal loading. It is significant for design and industrial manufacturing process of W/Al interface structure.

Article Title: Highly Resolution of Propranolol Using Oxidized Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes and β-cyclodextrin Derivatives as Impregnating Reagents
Author(s): Xiao-Qing Chen, Cong-Hao Sun, Fei-Peng Jiao, Jin-Gang Yu and Xin-Yu Jiang
Abstract: By using oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and β-cyclodextrin derivatives (methyl-β-cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl-β- cyclodextrin) as impregnating reagents, high efficiently resolution of (±)-propranolol, a kind of commonly used β-blockers, has been achieved on abovementioned reagents impregnated silica gel GF254 layers. The solvent system tert-butanol-acetonitrile with various volume ratios was further investigated. By detecting the spots at 254 nm with a UV lamp, the obtained chiral separation factors indicated oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and β-cyclodextrin derivatives impregnated TLC plates could be used for effectively chiral recognition of racemic compounds.

Abstract
Olanzapine, a lipophilic antipsychotic drug, has poor oral bioavailability due to hepatic first-pass metabolism. Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) of Olanzapine were developed using lipids (Stearic acid and Glyceryl monostearate), soy lecithin, poloxamer 188 and charge modifier stearyl amine by microemulsion technique. The aim of this research was to find out whether the bioavailability of olanzapine can be improved by administering olanzapine SLN orally to Wistar rats. Area under curve was increased (up to 4-fold) and clearance was decreased when olanzapine entrapped in SLNs with stearylamine were administered orally compared with that of olanzapine suspension. The enhanced relative bioavailability by the SLNs formulation might be attributed to avoidance of first-pass hepatic metabolism by intestinal lymphatic transport, direct uptake of nanoparticles through the GI tract, increased permeability by surfactants, and decreased degradation and clearance. These results indicate that olanzapine can be loaded into solid lipid nanoparticles for improvement of its oral bioavailability.

Affiliation: Biochemical Sciences Division and Plant Tissue Culture Division, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune – 411008, Maharashtra, India.
Abstract
An important challenge of considerable topical significance in nanotechnology is the development of eco-friendly experimental processes for the synthesis of nanomaterials in large quantities with variable sizes, shapes and chemical compositions. Green synthesis routes for the production of inorganic metal nanoparticles using whole cell of microorganisms and plant extracts are gaining tremendous popularity as these are non-toxic, cheap and occur at ambient conditions. The present work emphasizes on gold nanoparticles synthesis protocol using live plant callus cells. Peanut callus cells when incubated with HAuCl4 solution in ambient conditions reduced the precursor and lead to formation of well dispersed, water soluble extracellular and intracellular gold nanoparticles within 24 hours. The biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and further characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED). The particle size distribution shows that the average particle size is 50 nm for extra- and 31 nm for intracellular gold nanoparticles. The nanoparticles may be stabilized by proteins secreted by callus cells. The reduction process is believed to occur enzymatically, thus creating the possibility of a rational, plant cell-based method for the synthesis of nanoparticles over a wide range of chemical compositions.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to determine the therapeutic potential of novel carriers to deliver insulin into brain, by passing the BBB. PLGA nanoparticles and PEGylated PLGA nanoparticles were prepared by double emulsification method. PEG-PLGA copolymer was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, NMR and Mass spectroscopies. The release profiles of drug in various formulations were studied in PBS (pH 7.4). Results showed more sustained release of drug with Tween-80 based formulation in comparison with Tween-20 and PVA based formulations. A more sustained and extended release was observed upon chitosan coating of PEG-PLGA nanoparticles. Blood glucose level monitoring suggested that glucose level was not decreased significally in the peripheral region (p>0.05), when chitosan coated insulin loaded PEGylated nanoparticle was administered by intranasal route. This outcome in particular along with expected mucoadhesive and targeted benefit associated with chitosan based formulation drove us to conclude this formulation to be working best for the undertaken brain delivery issue.
